The Club has played an important role in the culture and lifestyle of Greater New Haven since its founding over a century ago. As the years have gone by, our club has evolved to fit the interests and character of our member community.

Our Beginnings

In the late 1800’s, leisure activities, especially ‘lawn tennis’ were the domain of the elite class. The New Haven Lawn Club was originally founded to create a prestigious establishment to cater to this group. The roots of the Club began with the upper crust of New Haven forming a private tennis club that would meet to play at each others homes. As the membership grew, it became evident that a permanent location was needed that would accommodate this growing community of tennis enthusiasts.

The new private club was built on a large tract of land on Whitney Avenue. In 1886 the Club played host to the first New England Tennis Tournament. The New Haven Lawn Club received its official charter in 1891.

Tennis remained the central interest at the new club facility and the game was played year round, even in near zero weather and with deep snow on the ground. Tennis courts were constructed out of wooden planks for use throughout the late fall and winter. Then in later years concrete courts were built.

The first clubhouse hosted several bedrooms, a dining room, kitchen, two squash courts, and a ballroom that became the site of many black tie affairs and debutante balls.

In 1929 the Club experienced a terrible setback when a raging fire destroyed the Clubhouse. The membership came together and raised the funds for a new, much larger facility designed by New Haven architect Douglas William Orr which opened for use in 1931.

Moving Forward

Over the years, more additions have been added and numerous renovations undertaken, such as the complete rebuilding of The Grill Room and upgrading of our swimming pool. While tennis is still an important focus of the Lawn Club, activities and events have been expanded to encompass a much broader range of interests and a greater emphasis on family.

Over time, the New Haven Lawn Club has evolved into a much more inclusive private club than that originated by the founders. We have grown and changed with the times to suit the style, needs, and character of our New Haven community members. Our mission is to continue to adapt with our membership, while holding true always to our tradition of excellence in all things.
